Health Benefits of Almonds
I absolutely love peanut butter, which is probably the most common nut butter. But I also love almond butter, and I love switching it up and alternating with other nut butters like almond butter. It’s important to have a varied diet! Almonds have loads of healthy benefits. They’re full of antioxidants, but so much more too! According to Healthline ”Almonds contain lots of healthy fats, fiber, protein, magnesium and vitamin E. The health benefits of almonds include lower blood sugar levels, reduced blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. They can also reduce hunger and promote weight loss. All things considered, almonds are as close to perfect as a food can get.” Sounds good to me!!
Ways To Use Almond Butter
The options for using almond butter are basically endless. I loooove almond butter. It’s got a delicious roasted almond flavour, but it’s also a neutral enough flavour that it goes with soo many different flavours. Some examples of how I use it are:
- oatmeal bowl topping
- in smoothies
- in baking
- on toast
- with fruit, such as apple slices
This apple pie smoothie recipe is an example of how I have used my homemade almond butter. This apple pie oatmeal bowl is another delicious example!
Process
Start by buying almonds that aren’t salted or roasted. I’m thinking you can buy roasted almonds as long as they’re not salted, but if you roast them yourself you know how much oil etc is used and how well roasted the almonds are. So I always buy natural almonds to make my almond butter. So spread the almonds out evenly on a baking tray and then pop the almonds in the oven to roast!
Now I find it’s preferable to use a high speed blender to make almond butter. This way the end result will be creamiest and smoothest. But you can absolutely use a food processor, that’s how I started making nut butter years ago before I had a strong enough blender. Now I use my Vitamix. I find I don’t have to scrape the sides as many times as I did with a food processor. With a blender I use a tamper as well which really speeds the process along. Your equipment and properly roasted almonds is the most important for how to make healthy almond butter at home.

How To Make Easy and Healthy Almond Butter
Ingredients
- 3 cups unsalted and unroasted almonds
- ¼ tsp salt
- approx tsp coconut oil optional if you want the almond butter extra creamy or if you find yours is a bit more dry than you'd like
Instructions
- Roast raw almonds in the oven at 175 C, for about 10 minutes. You’ll know they’re ready when your kitchen starts filling with a heavenly almond aroma, and they’ve got a bit of colour.
- Let the almonds cool slightly, then add the almonds to a food processor or high speed blender and mix mix mix away until it’s suuper smooth. If you're using a blender, you can use the tamper to get the mixture really going. You might have to stop and scrape the sides a couple of times, or let the machine cool if it's taking a while to make the butter.
- When the butter is perfectly creamy add 1/4 tsp salt. Optional add ins can be coconut oil, or spices or sweeteners like cinnamon, vanilla or cardamom (my favourites) or even maple syrup. Mix again. Taste to see if you would like more salt etc. I always add salt, but sometimes the others as it depends on my plans for the almond butter 🙂
- Store in an airtight jar in the fridge. Enjoy!
